L-B's Parmelee bounces back, will wrestle today

COLUMBUS – Liberty-Benton's Evie Parmelee had a tough finish to her first match of the OHSAA Girls Wrestling Championship Friday at the Schottenstein Center, and suffered only her second loss of the season.But the Liberty-Benton junior came right back, won a match, and kept her season going.Parmelee, facing New Philadelphia's Isabelle Ramirez in her first round match, held a 4-0 lead in the third period before Ramirez rallied. She scored three points, then scored a pinfall with less than 40 seconds remaining.The loss sent Parmelee into the consolations, and meant she had to wrestle again Friday, this time against Olentangy Liberty's Abbey Enders.This time, Parmelee dominated, sticking Enders in 1:58.The first round didn't go well for the area's competitors Friday. All five of the area athletes who wrestled were beaten in their opening matches.Elmwood's Triniti Bechstein, a sophomore who, like Parmelee, was a district champion at Findlay last week, was pinned by Lilliana Wilson in 2:35. She did rebound, defeating Roosevelt's Penny Edwards in the consolation round, 5-4.Bechstein's teammate, Libbie Tyson, dropped a 10-7 decision to Little Miami's Madelyn Simmerman in her opening bout at 135 pounds.The Royals sophomore then dropped her consolation match to Berea-Midpark's Micah Finley, getting pinned in 2:23.Also in the 135 weight class, Audrey Whitener – Findlay High's lone representative in Columbus this weekend – was pinned by Alter's Alora Strauser in 1:03.Whitener did advance in the consolation round when her opponent, Olentangy Orange's Chloe Tomkins, forfeited.Fostoria 170-pounder Ariana Espinosa-Snowden, a senior and three-time state qualifier, was edged in her first match by Fairfield's Lillian Grogan, 2-1.In her consolation match, Espinosa-Snowden was pinned by Delaware Hayes' Evelyn Krauss in 1:18.Espinosa-Snowden was injured during the match.The girls will wrestle in the championship quarterfinals today at 12:50 p.m. The consolation round will start at 2:10 p.m. FINDLAY YMCA SWIMMINGGENEVA – In the Ohio Junior Swimming Championships in Geneva, Findlay's Ellie Zerr recorded a big win on Thursday.Zerr won the girls 10 and under 200 freestyle in a record time of 2:17.52.Also for Findlay, Tori Lewis finished fifth in the 11-12 500 free, finishing in 5:34.2.
