City officials remind drivers of flood safety

FINDLAY — Findlay Fire Department is reminding drivers of the dangers of driving through flooded roadways, following recent flood conditions. Local emergency officials are reminding residents to never drive through flooded roadways or around barricades during periods of high water. Even a small amount of moving water can pose a serious risk to drivers, passengers and first responders. Flooded roads are often more dangerous than they appear. As little as 6 inches of moving water can cause a vehicle to lose control, and 12 inches can carry a car. Roadways hidden beneath water may be washed out, covered in debris, or structurally compromised—making it impossible to determine safe passage. Attempting to drive through high water could lead to vehicles being swept away by current, as well as the possibility of engine failure or stalling in hazardous areas and delayed emergency response due to preventable rescue situations. "Barricades are placed for a reason — they are there to protect lives," said Fire Chief Josh Eberle. "Driving around them not only puts you at risk, but also endangers the first responders who may have to rescue you and delays response to other emergencies." Residents are urged to follow all posted road closures and avoid flooded areas. When encountering a water covering a roadway, the safest choice is turning around and finding an alternate route.
