Arlington boys, USHS girls claim team titles at Carey

CAREY RELAYSCAREY – Upper Sandusky dominated the girls meet and Arlington edged Carey and Upper Sandusky in a heated battle for the boys title at the Carey Relays on Saturday.Led by 6-foot-10 senior Calvin Willow, Arlington was head and shoulders above the rest – literally – in earning first place points in three field events.Willow had the meet's best marks in the high jump (6-6) and long jump (18-11¾) in leading Arlington to first place in those events. He also had the second best triple jump (39-1), with D.J. Stevens (3rd, 34-9¼) and Brayden Sterrett (5th, 34-1½) completing Arlington's first place team total.Braylon Rucker, Cuyler Rausch and Lucas McIlroy earned Arlington two other firsts when they teamed with Elijah Hunt to win the 1,600-meter relay (3:37.34) and with Ayden Cavinee on the first place sprint medley relay (1:37.24).Arlington scored 115 points in taking home the first place hardware. Carey (112), Upper Sandusky (107), Riverdale (96) and Hopewell-Loudon (93) were all in the battle for runner-up honors. Tiffin Calvert (48), Gibsonburg (44) and North Baltimore (19) completed the field.Carey, which sent two relay teams to the state meet last spring, captured the middle-distance relays and Riverdale, led by 2025 state qualifier Kolten Evans, owned the longer races.Tripp Phoenix and Lucas Smith-Haywood figured in two Carey wins, teaming with Mace Puckett and Blake Mangett on the winning 400 relay (44.93) and with Dalen Walter and Lincoln Ritter on the first place 800 relay (1:33.60).Evans, Gabe Donaldson and Cale Young were double-event winners for Riverdale, placing first in the 3,200 relay with Gio Noascono (9:01.84) and the distance medley relay with Cohen Phillips (11:19.34).Upper Sandusky got firsts from Ashton Clark in the pole vault (13-6) and Carter Pohlman in the mile (4:51.97).Hopewell-Loudon's Aiden Ewald put up some of the most impressive numbers of the day. Ohio's Division III state runner-up in the discus last spring, Ewald swept both throwing events Saturday, winning the discus with a throw of 173-9 and the shot with a mark of 54-10½.In the girls meet, Upper Sandusky earned a good portion of its 140 total points in the distance events, with Abbi Ault, Bailey Hinesman and Jocelyn Leightey winning the 3,200 relay with Madison Miles (11:16.41) and the distance medley relay with Madelyn Collins (14:11.60). Leightey was also first in the mile (5:47.35) and Shasteen had the top pole vault (8-6).Riverdale edged Arlington 103-95 for second and Hopewell-Loudon was fourth (77), followed by Carey (72), Tiffin Calvert (57), North Baltimore (49) and Gibsonburg (32).Arlington's team of Paige Clevenger, Callie Hartman, Olivia Pepple and Alexis Grieser won the 400 relay (52.12), and Riverdale's foursome of Paige Vent, Summer Boutwell, Emma Kemmere and Marissa Bonham captured the 1,600 relay (4:17.94).Riverdale was first in the high jump relay behind a second-best leap of 4-10 from Bonham, a state qualifier in both running and field events last spring.Carey's Scarlett Prater had the top throw in the discus (95-1), and Hopewell-Loudon got first-place efforts from Lily Brickner in the triple jump (29-8½) and Laura Cook in the shot (32-0). JOE RIDER RELAYSWAYNESFIELD – Pandora-Gilboa turned in a number of elite efforts, especially in the boys competition, at the Joe Rider Horn Relays held at Waynesfield-Goshen on Saturday.Adam Buell and Caleb Doty were two-event winners for P-G. Buell won the 1,600 with a time of 4:49.61 and teamed with Gavino Barrera, Ty Meyer and Landen Moore on the first place 3,200 relay (9:03.03). Doty had the best throws in both the discus (166-0) and shot (45-5).Ben Burkholder was first in the pole vault (14-0) and second in the long jump (20-11). Cory Gerten topped the field in the high jump (5-10) and Camden Verhoff was first in the triple jump (38-1½).P-G teams also finished first in the boys (12:15.3) and girls (16:31.7) distance medley relays.
