Van Buren, Elmwood remain unbeaten in BVC softball

VAN BUREN 8 RIVERDALE 7 VAN BUREN – In a back and forth battle, Van Buren twice rallied to tie the game, then rallied a third time to win it in the bottom of the seventh and come away with an 8-7 BVC softball win over Riverdale. Jordan Patton was the winning pitcher for Van Buren, and helped her own cause with four base hits. Audrey Riegle drove in four runs with a single and a double, with Avery Beall (1B, 2B, RBI), Andrea Groman (2-1B) and Ava DeCooman (1B, 2B, RBI) also adding two hits in helping the Knights, 3-1 overall, stay unbeaten in BVC play at 2-0. Riverdale led 5-0, but Van Buren came back to tie the game 5-5, then 6-6. Hannah Vent, Dylann Thacker, Ava Manns and Carly Karcher all had two hits for Riverdale. Addi Hoffman and Cheyenne Podach combined on a two-hitter in the five-inning contest. Each gave one hit and both combined for five strikeouts. Jillian Main lined three base hits and Maddy Campbell and Makayla Casey had two each. Libby Tyson added an RBI double for the Royals, who ran their unbeaten record to 8-0 heading into a pivotal stretch of games. Elmwood is at Arcadia for a BVC contest today, travels to Archbold to take on the 6-2 Blue Streaks on Saturday, and visits Ada on Monday in what could be a showdown between two undefeated BVC teams. BUCYRUS 14 CAREY 13 BUCYRUS – Carey tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh, but Bucyrus pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the inning and beat the Blue Devils 14-13 in a Northern 10 Conference slugfest on Wednesday. Maci Messerschmidt was 4-for-4 with three singles, a triple and four runs-batted in and Haylee Stratton knocked in three runs with two singles and a home run. Maddison Kent (3-1B, 2 RBI) also had three hits in helping the Lady Redmen (2-4, 1-1 N10) avenge Tuesday's 14-2 loss to Carey and earn their first league win. Carey pounded out 17 hits bit also committed six errors.
