How artist fees actually work

A past MCPA board member is fond of asking me how much we paid for a show. Almost every performance, he can be counted on to ask, "How much did we pay them?" I usually give him a range, not a number. Sometimes that is because artists request confidentiality, and even when they do not, it is generally understood across the industry that those details stay private. But even if I could share an exact figure, it would not tell the whole story. There is rarely a single, simple answer. Every deal is structured differently, and those structures matter just as much as the number itself. At the core, artist fees are about risk. Who carries it, how much of it, and what happens when a show performs better or worse than expected. Most deals fall into three basic categories. The first is the flat fee. We agree to pay a set amount for the performance, whether the show sells out or not. That number is based on the artist's history, their current demand, and what the market will support. Once the contract is signed, it does not change. If ticket sales are strong, we keep the upside. If they are not, we absorb the loss. For the artist, it is predictable and low risk. For us, it requires confidence in the audience. This model used to dominate the industry but is less common now, especially for artists who want to share in strong sales. The second is the percentage, or "door," deal. There is no fixed fee. The artist is paid based on a percentage of ticket revenue, sometimes after certain expenses are deducted. MCPA covers its costs, the artist covers theirs, and the remaining revenue is split. When a show performs well, both sides benefit. When it does not, both sides feel it. It is a true partnership model, but it comes with uncertainty. For that reason, it is more common in smaller venues or emerging artist situations, and less typical at the Mainstage level. The third, and most common for us, is the guarantee plus percentage. The artist receives a guaranteed minimum, then shares in additional revenue once certain thresholds are met. Sometimes that means a percentage of the profit once certain expenses are covered. Other times it means tiered bonuses tied to sales levels. The details vary, but the idea is consistent. There is a floor and there is upside. Both sides carry some risk, and both benefit if the show performs well. And then there are the deals that do not fit neatly into any one category. Many agreements are hybrids. A lower guarantee paired with a higher percentage. A bonus tied to a sellout. A structure where the split shifts as more tickets are sold. These blended deals help bridge the gap between what an artist wants and what a venue can support. They also reflect relationships. When there is trust, there is often more flexibility. This is why the question "What did you pay?" is harder to answer than it sounds. What looks like a single number is often a range. What sounds fixed is often variable.
