FHS tennis knocks off Springfield

TENNIS FINDLAY 4SPRINGFIELD 1FINDLAY – After tough back-to-back losses to Anthony Wayne and Toledo St. John's, Findlay High's boys tennis team rebounded in a big way on Friday with a 4-1 Northern Lakes League win over Springfield.Findlay's Ashton Barger went overtime at No. 3 singles to beat Springfield's Ryan Sharp 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).At No. 2 singles, Aidan Buddelmeyer scored a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Micah YoungFindlay swept the double matches, with Noah Klink and Grant Basinger (No. 1) rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Dylan Scheuer and Fahed Yehka, and Zack Barnhart and Knox Lindahl (No. 2) beating Noah Hernandez and Eli Hernandez 6-2, 6-4.Springfield's lone win came at No. 1 singles where Zachary White defeated Owen Vick 6-4, 6-2.Findlay (3-3) returns to the courts on Monday when the Trojans visit Bowling Green for another NLL matchup. TRACK MOWREY INVITATIONAL VAN BUREN – Arlington doubled up in the 200- and 400-meter races, won the 1,600-meter relay and got field events firsts from Calvin Willow and Logan Hartman in winning the boys title at the Van Buren/Mowrey Invitational on Friday.Arlington scored 159 points to beat out Carey (135) and Van Buren (105.5) in the boys meet. McComb (73.5), Elmwood (61), Kalida (35), North Baltimore (32), Vanlue (25) and Arcadia (16) completed the field.Van Buren won the girls championship by a 149-127 margin over Elmwood, followed by Arlington (100), Kalida (83), Carey (72), North Baltimore (58), McComb (39) and Arcadia (27).Arlington's Lucas McIlroy and Cuyler Rausch went 1-2 in the 200 and 400, with McIlroy first (23.68) and Rausch second (23.68) in the 200, and Rausch breaking the tape first (51.29) and McIlroy following close behind (52.40) in the 400.McIlroy and Rausch later teamed with Braylon Rucker and Eli Hurt on the winning 1,600 relay team (3:31.82). Willow leaped 6-4 to win the high jump and Hartman won the discus with a throw of 146-11.Carey's Tripp Phoenix and McComb's Carter Frater had impressive meets.Phoenix won the 100 (11.14) and led off the winning 400 (44.74) and 800-meter (1:32.1) relays that included Lucas Smith-Haywood. Mace Puckett and Blake Mangett completed the 4-x-100 group; Lincoln Ritter and Dalen Walter were the 800 relay foursome.Ritter also battled Frater in the hurdles, winning the 110s (15.01) just ahead of Frater (15.44), and finishing a close second (41.21) to Frater (41.18) in the 300.Frater also won the long jump, soaring 22-1 to win that event by over two feet.In the mid to long distance races, Carey's Landyn Miller won the 800 (2:04.06), Elmwood's Henry Good took the 1,600 (4:45.43) and Van Buren's Carter Finley captured the 3,200 (10:31.76). Finley later teamed with Carter Fry, Griffin Ware and Andrew Puperi to finish first in the 3,200 relay (8:45.69).Carey and Van Buren had 1-2 finishes in two of the field events. Puckett (45-8) and Ritter (43-8) were first and second in the shot, while Van Buren's Brooks Hill (13-0) and Gavin Fruth (13-0) were 1-2 in the pole vault. Lydia Ponn was a double individual champion in leading Van Buren to the girls title, winning both the high jump (5-0) and pole vault (8-6). Kaitlyn Homan, Grace Harrington, Darby Poling and Bryar Kendrick claimed the Black Knights only other first by winning the 3,200 relay (1:01.76).Doubling up was a popular pastime in the girls meet, with Arlington's Alexis Grieser winning both the 100 (12.65) and 200 (26.36), Carey's Elyse Holsinger finishing first in the 100 (16.80) and 300 (46.97) hurdles and North Baltimore's Ady Reynolds sweeping both the 1,600 (5:58.24) and 3,200-meter (12:9.675) runs.Grieser also anchored the winning 800 relay (1:50.44) that included Paige Clevenger, Callie Hartman and Olivia Pepple. Holsinger, Allison Baldridge, Bella Phoenix and Emma Ritter won the 1,600 relay (4:20.57) for Carey, with Ritter also across the line first in the 800 (2:32.09).Arcadia's Shia Watkins, a state qualifier for the Redskins a year ago, won the discus with a throw of 126-1. Elmwood doubled up in the field events with Karlee Crum winning the shot (36-11½) and Alayna Beasley the long jump (16-1).
