Trojans take care of unbeaten Northview

BASEBALL FINDLAY 5NORTHVIEW 2FINDLAY – Reece Stillings and Hunter Sertell gave Findlay seven strong innings on the mound, Blade Wendt and Cole Hull delivered some clutch extra-base hits, and the Trojans played errorless defense on Monday when the Trojans knocked off unbeaten Sylvania Northview 5-2 in a Northern Lakes League Buckeye Division matchup at Woody Curlis Field.Findlay chalked up its third straight win, its fourth in five games and is 5-4 overall. Northview was handed its first loss in seven games.Monday's game was the NLL Buckeye Division opener for both teams, who will turn around and square off again today in Sylvania in the second game of the home-and-home series.Stillings, a senior right-hander, went the first 5-2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out six and walking five. Sertell, a sophomore right-hander, finished up, striking out two of the five batters he faced.Findlay took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, added two key runs in the third, and upped the margin to 5-0 in the fifth before Northview put up its two runs in the sixth.Findlay's first three batters – outfielders Jackson Flechtner and Luke Crates and Wendt, a senior shortstop – were a combined 6-for-9 at the plate, scored five runs and drove in two. Flechtner and Crates both singled twice, walked once and scored two runs. Wendt singled, tripled and drove in two runs. Hull added an RBI double.Conner Draper led Northview. SOFTBALL FINDLAY 9OREGON CLAY 0FINDLAY – Natalie Steffes went seven strong innings and Addie Sprang, Ryan Boes and Davinee Harris all went yard as Findlay High's softball team used solid pitching and the long ball to beat Oregon Clay 9-0 on Monday in a Northern Lakes League cross-over game at Babcock Field.Steffes gave up just three hits over seven scoreless innings. The senior right-hander struck out seven and walked four.Findlay did not have one really big inning, but delivered enough big hits to power past Clay, which is 7-2 and sitting atop the NLL Cardinal Division at 2-0. Boes and Sprang had a single, double and home run each. Harris added a solo blast for the Trojans, who are 9-2 and tied for ninth in the Division I state rankings.Boes hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Sprang, who already owns school records for home runs in a season (8) and career (20), hit her fifth of the year, a solo shot that put Findlay up 4-0 in the third.
