Findlay regains first place by beating Yellow Jackets

Baseball FINDLAY 5PERRYSBURG 1PERRYSBURG – Perrysburg took sole possession of first place in the league standings from Findlay on Monday.Tuesday, the Trojans took it back.Findlay got standout pitching for the second straight game, found some gaps that were hard to find a day earlier, and beat Perrysburg 5-1 to avenge Monday's 1-0 loss to the Yellow Jackets and reclaim the outright lead in the Northern Lakes League's Buckeye Division.Junior right-hander Cole Hull pitched 6-2/3 solid innings for the win. Hunter Sertell came on to get the save as Findlay, 9-5 overall, improved to 3-1 in NLL Buckeye games. Anthony Wayne (1-1) and Toledo Whitmer (1-1) both have one league loss, but both trail Findlay by two games in the win column. Perrysburg is 2-2 in the Buckeye, and Sylvania Northview is 1-3.Alex Gonzalez and Blade Wendt both had two hits and scored a run. Luke Crates had one hit, but drove in two runs.Findlay hosts Napoleon in an NLL Buckeye Division/Cardinal Division cross-over game on Friday, and is at Ottawa Hills on Monday. WAYNE 9FINDLAY 4WHITEHOUSE – Anthony Wayne got offensive pop from Lyla Carrizales and solid pitching from Piper Phillips in posting a 9-4 win over Findlay in Tuesday's Northern Lakes League battle of state-ranked softball teams.Carrizales, one of the top returnees from an Anthony Wayne team that reached the Division II state semifinals a year ago, was 2-for-3 and drove in four runs for the No. 1-ranked Generals, who are 14-1 overall and 2-0 in NLL Buckeye Division games. The senior infielder knocked in Anthony Wayne's first run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, singled in a run during the Generals' five-run rally in the second, and put an exclamation mark on the win with a two-run home run in the fourth.Megan Sumner and Mackenzie Barker had two hits each and Avrie Plontz and Kaci Jo Carter added RBI hits.Phillips earned a complete game win, giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out 13 Findlay batters. Addison Hartman, Monika Kerwin and Ryan Boes all had two hits for Findlay, with Hartman driving in two of the Trojans' three runs.Senior right-hander Natalie Steffes took the pitching loss for Findlay, 11-3 overall and 2-2 in the NLL Buckeye Division. Tennis NORTHVIEW 4FINDLAY 1FINDLAY – Findlay's Owen Vick gutted out a tough three-set win at No. 1 singles, but Sylvania Northview took the other four matches by almost identical scores in chalking up a 4-1 Northern Lakes League boys tennis win over the Trojans at the FHS Courts.Vick outlasted Northview's No. 1 Hunter Moriarity 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Boys lacrosse FINDLAY 9SOUTHVIEW 3FINDLAY – Cam Wight scored five goals, Will Hammer and Henry Iten had two each and Findlay High's boys lacrosse team took another solid step toward what it hopes is a Northern Lakes League championship with a 9-3win over Sylvania Southview Tuesday at Donnell Stadium.Now 8-3 overall, Findlay is 6-0 in all games against Northern Lakes League opponents. Perrysburg (8-2) is 5-0. The two teams will square off twice yet this season, Tuesday in Perrysburg and May 9 in Findlay.Hammer also had three assists in Tuesday's game with Southview. (14-sub head)White picks AkronCOLUMBUS – Colin White is leaving the Buckeyes, but he won't be leaving the Buckeye state after the Ottawa-Glandorf graduate and former Ohio Mr. Basketball award winner announced Tuesday on social media that he will be continuing his college basketball career at the University of Akron.White had announced earlier that he would be entering the transfer portal after two nondescript seasons at Ohio State. Hampered by a leg injury that led to off-season surgery between his freshman and sophomore seasons, White, a 6-foot-6 guard/forward, started one game and played in 48 during his time at Ohio State, averaging 1.1 points and 1.1 rebounds a game.White won Ohio's Mr. Basketball Award in 2024 after an illustrious career at O-G in which he scored 2,027 points, the most by any player in Putnam County basketball history. The Titans posted a 94-14 overall record with White in the lineup and made four trips to the state tournament. White and LeBron James are the only two players in Ohio prep basketball history to be starters in four consecutive state semifinal games.White, along with other announced transfers Tahj Staveskie, Max Burtin and Exavier Wilson will be joining a successful Akron program that last season went 29-6, won the Mid-American Conference tournament for the third straight year, and qualified for the NCAA tourney.
