Ramaswamy wins GOP nomination for governor

FINDLAY — Vivek Ramaswamy easily won the Republican nomination for governor, setting up a fall contest against the Democratic nominee, Amy Acton. Unofficial results posted at the Ohio Secretary of State's website showed Ramaswamy with a commanding lead as of 9 p.m., with about 83 percent of the vote, compared to about 17 percent for Casey Putsch, a lesser-known candidate. Originally, there had also been a third Republican candidate, Heather Hill, but she was ruled ineligible after her running mate pulled out of the election. Acton did not have an opponent in the Democratic primary. The race will also feature a Libertarian candidate, Don Kissick. Democrats and Republicans lost little time looking ahead to the fall contest. Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, praised Ramaswamy and said, "Ohio families have seen the disastrous results of Amy Acton's progressive leadership. Acton will treat taxpayers like an open checkbook, implementing the same failed tax-and-spend policies that led to crushing inflation and smaller paychecks." Meanwhile, the chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, heaped praise on Acton. "She's a strong leader who overcame hunger, homelessness and abuse, and has spent her career fighting for Ohio kids and families. Dr. Acton knows Ohioans are feeling the pain of high costs and will work every day to give families some breathing room and make life more affordable," Beshear said. Here are the results for other contested statewide races. We've left out the results for races that featured only one candidate on the primary ballot. Democrats U.S. Senate Former U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, hoping to win his old job back, easily turned aside a challenge from a little-known opponent, Ron Kincaid. Brown had about 91 percent of the vote as of about 9 p.m. Brown will be running against incumbent Republican Sen. Jon Husted in the general election. The race also features a Libertarian candidate, William Redpath. Attorney general John Kulewicz, a Columbus attorney, won the Democratic nomination for attorney general, defeating former state Rep. Elliot Forhan. Kulewicz will be running against Republican candidate Keith Faber. Secretary of state State Rep. Allison Russo won the Democratic nomination for secretary of state, besting a Cincinnati physician, Dr. Bryan Hambley. Russo will run this fall against the Republican candidate, Robert Sprague, who also won Tuesday. There's also a Libertarian candidate, Tom Pruss. "I want to thank the voters, my family, supporters, and a great team for their support. It's an honor to be the Democratic nominee for Ohio Secretary of State, and it is time to stop the musical chairs played by Republicans for these critical public offices," Russo said. Republicans Secretary of state Robert Sprague won the Republican nomination for secretary of state, defeating Marcell Strbich. Sprague is currently the state treasurer. Sprague will run against the Democratic primary winner, state Rep. Allison Russo, and Libertarian Tom Pruss. State treasurer Jay Edwards had the early lead in the Republican nomination for state treasurer, ahead of state Sen. Kristina D. Roegner in what appeared to be a close race. If that holds up, Edwards will run against Democrat Seth Walsh, who did not have an opponent in the primary. Supreme Court While most of the Supreme Court races had only one candidate, Republicans had a four-person race in the primary to pick a candidate to oppose sitting Democratic Justice Jennifer Brunner. By deadline Tuesday night, the race among candidates Andrew King, Jill Lanzinger, Ronald Lewis and Colleen O'Donnell was too close to call. Full results for the race will appear in Thursday's paper.
