'None of us meant to carry this burden alone'

FINDLAY — Hancock County law enforcement officers, families and community members gathered Monday evening at Fort Findlay Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 20 for an annual memorial service honoring officers who have died in the line of duty. Representatives from the Findlay, Bluffton and Fostoria police departments, the Hancock County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol attended the ceremony, held in conjunction with National Police Week, observed May 10-16. Established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, the week recognizes "the courage, sacrifice and dedication of law enforcement officers." Flags nationwide will fly at half-staff in remembrance. This year's observance noted that 363 officers were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in 2026. "Many of their stories and sacrifices had been lost to history until now," the Hancock County Board of Commissioners wrote in a proclamation read by Commissioner Bill Bateson. Guest speaker John DiPietro, president of the FOP Lodge 117 in Kettering and a retired Miami Township officer, emphasized both community support and officer wellness. "We've got a silent majority that supports law enforcement, but more importantly supports law and order in their communities," he said. "I know you want law and order. I know you want peace and harmony… We're going to help you get there." Chief Deputy Tom Walker of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office delivered the benediction, reminding attendees of the emotional toll the profession carries. "Services like this remind us of our sacrifice, duty and loss," Walker said. "They also remind us that behind every badge is a human being … and their families often carry the burdens that the public never sees. None of us were meant to carry this burden alone."
